What spring in New York looks like
New York's spring runs from mid-March through May, with a rapid transition from the tail end of winter to genuinely warm weather. March can still be cold and blustery — temperatures of 4–12°C (39–54°F) are normal — but April and May settle into the kind of mild, variable weather that suits walking, outdoor eating, and extended time in the city's parks. The city collectively exhales after winter in spring in a way that's immediately perceptible: restaurants move tables back onto the pavement, the parks fill, and New Yorkers who spent January indoors reappear.
Cherry blossoms (late March–April)
The most visually spectacular moment of the spring season is the cherry blossom bloom, which typically peaks between late March and mid-April depending on winter temperatures. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Cherry Esplanade is the most famous setting — a formal double row of mature Yoshino cherries that's genuinely beautiful in full bloom, though it draws crowds at peak weekends. Free alternatives include Central Park's cherry trees near the Reservoir and along the path to the Conservatory Garden, and the trees at Sakura Park near the Columbia University area at 122nd Street.
Outdoor season opening
Spring marks the reopening of several seasonal venues and activities: Governors Island ferry service typically restarts in late April or May; the Coney Island attractions open for the season; outdoor pools in the Parks Department system open in late June; the SummerStage concert series in Central Park announces its programming. The NYC Ferry's full summer route schedule usually comes into effect in spring. Little Island's full programming season opens for the year.
April vs May
April is the better value month — hotel rates are lower (shoulder season) and the cherry blossoms are the draw. May is often the most pleasant month of the year in terms of weather — warm but rarely hot, with low humidity, reliably good outdoor conditions, and the full cultural season in swing. The Brooklyn Half Marathon and the Five Boro Bike Tour both typically take place in May, bringing significant crowds to their respective routes (worth knowing about if you're in the city those weekends, as they create road closures). The Frieze Art Fair (international contemporary art fair) happens in May in Randall's Island.
What to wear
Spring dressing in New York requires genuine layering: a typical April day might be 10°C in the morning, 18°C in the afternoon, and 12°C again in the evening. A packable rain jacket or light waterproof is worth carrying, as spring showers can be brief but significant. Light trainers or walking shoes are fine from mid-April; before that, something waterproof is practical. By May, summer-weight clothes work for daytime with a layer for evenings.
Specific events
The Tribeca Festival (film, usually late April/early May) offers public screening tickets and talks in addition to industry events. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Sakura Matsuri (Japanese cherry blossom festival) takes place over one weekend in late April or early May — a genuine cultural event with performances and food alongside the blossom viewing. Earth Day events in Central Park and around the city fall in late April. The NYC Half Marathon is typically in March; the Brooklyn Half in May.
