The essentials
- The Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met) — vast enough that no single visit covers it. Pick two or three wings rather than trying to see everything.
- MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) — the modern and contemporary art anchor, with a collection most casual visitors will actually recognize pieces from.
- American Museum of Natural History — the dinosaur halls and the Rose Center planetarium make this a strong pick even for visitors who don't usually do museums.
Underrated picks
- The Tenement Museum — guided tours through actual preserved Lower East Side immigrant apartments, told through real families' histories. More affecting than most bigger museums.
- The Cloisters — the Met's medieval-art branch, housed in an actual assembled-from-Europe monastery building in Fort Tryon Park at the northern tip of Manhattan. Quiet, gorgeous, and skipped by most short-trip visitors.
- The Studio Museum in Harlem — a center for contemporary art by artists of African descent, and a genuine anchor of Harlem's cultural life.
Is a museum pass worth it?
Only if you're genuinely visiting four or more paid museums — the math rarely works out for a casual two-museum trip. Also note that several major museums (including the Met, for NY state residents, and others on rotating free hours) offer pay-what-you-wish or free entry windows — worth checking each museum's own site before buying anything.
