What this is
Totally New York is an independent, growing directory of everything to do with visiting and understanding New York City — travel logistics, boroughs and neighborhoods, food, culture, and things to do. It's built the way a card catalogue is built: filed by department, not written as a stream of blog posts.
How we're building it
We're starting small on purpose — a handful of solid, honestly-written pages in each department — and adding more every week rather than launching with thousands of thin, low-effort pages. Each department is designed to grow into a full section over time: every neighborhood, every subway line, every borough's food scene, without changing how the site is organized.
How we vet what we write
No paid placement and no sponsored rankings. Where we cover hotels, restaurants, or specific businesses, the goal is an honest, useful description over a marketing one — including where something isn't worth your time.

Why the format
Most travel guides are either very broad (every city in the world, one page each) or very narrow (one person's blog about one trip). Totally New York is trying for a middle path: genuinely deep coverage of a single city, built in public as a growing directory rather than published all at once as a finished book. The structure is borrowed from reference publishing — departments, guides by category, indexes — rather than from the travel blog format, which tends to age badly and doesn't answer "which neighborhood should I stay in" as well as a properly organised reference does.
What we cover and what we don't
The directory covers NYC as a destination: logistics of getting there and around, where to stay and why, what to see and do, the five boroughs and their distinct characters, food and culture. It doesn't cover the arts calendar (too fast-changing), specific restaurants in a Yelp-style database (too much to maintain reliably), or day-trip destinations beyond occasional references where they're directly relevant to a trip based in the city.
What's coming
The site is actively growing. Planned additions include deeper borough-level coverage, more neighbourhood guides, seasonal content, and expanded language coverage. The best version of this site is a few years away — but the pages that exist now are written to the standard we want the finished thing to have.
