This is a practical airport-access change, not a change to the terminal itself. Terminal 7 remains open, but the vehicle route for dropping off departing passengers has moved as construction reshapes JFK’s road network.
The change matters to New Yorkers taking family or friends to the airport as much as to visitors arriving by taxi or rideshare. It is also easy to confuse with separate pickup arrangements for arriving passengers, so check exactly which movement you are making before setting off.
01 · What changed at Terminal 7
From Tuesday 22 September 2026, until further notice, departure drop-offs for JFK Terminal 7 are being relocated to the ground level of the Terminal 7 Parking Garage. The change is part of the airport’s continuing roadway reconfiguration during the $19 billion JFK redevelopment.
The Port Authority’s 18 September weekly travel advisory is the clearest current instruction for Terminal 7 departures. Drivers heading to Terminals 5, 7 and 8 are also being directed to use the JFK Expressway, while the Van Wyck Expressway is the direct approach for Terminals 1 and 4.
For anyone taking a taxi, rideshare or private car to a departing flight at Terminal 7, allow extra time and follow the temporary signs rather than relying on an old saved route or an earlier airport page.
02 · The garage is a drop-off zone, not a parking option
The Terminal 7 garage remains closed for parking. Moving departure drop-offs to its ground level does not mean travellers can leave a car there.
Terminal 7 customers who need airport parking are being encouraged to use public transport or to pre-book parking in Terminal 8’s Red Garage at least 24 hours in advance. The Port Authority is also warning that construction can cause delays and reroutes across the airport roadway network.
If someone is simply dropping you off, the new ground-level garage arrangement is the relevant instruction. If the driver intends to park and come into the terminal, use an approved parking option instead.
03 · Buses and shuttle vans have different instructions
The garage has height restrictions, so the Port Authority says buses and shuttle vans are being directed to a new bus stop on the Terminal 7 roadway. The advisory describes that stop as the location for passenger pickup and says wayfinding signs will direct passengers and drivers to the bus and van areas.
Because the wording for larger vehicles differs from the standard passenger-car drop-off instruction, bus and shuttle passengers should follow the on-site signs and staff directions rather than entering the garage automatically.
04 · The simplest alternatives to driving to Terminal 7
JFK is strongly recommending public transport while redevelopment work continues. AirTrain connects the terminals with Jamaica and Howard Beach, where travellers can connect with subway or Long Island Rail Road services.
Drivers who want to avoid terminal-frontage traffic can use the free drop-off and pickup area at the AirTrain JFK Lefferts Boulevard station. From there, passengers can take the free AirTrain for roughly eight minutes to the terminals.
The airport’s general transportation page also warns that construction is slowing all vehicle drop-off options, including taxis, ride apps and private cars. If timing matters, rail plus AirTrain may be more predictable than trying to reach the terminal frontage.
05 · Do not confuse departure drop-offs with Terminal 7 ride-app pickups
This 22 September change concerns people being dropped off for departing flights at Terminal 7. It is separate from earlier construction arrangements affecting where arriving passengers meet ride-app or car-service pickups.
JFK has changed several pickup and drop-off zones during redevelopment, and different vehicle types can be sent to different locations. Check whether you are dealing with a departure drop-off, an arrival pickup, parking or a bus/shuttle movement before following directions.
06 · Check the newest advisory before leaving
One older JFK construction-information page still carries wording that Terminal 7 departures remain unchanged. The dated 18 September 2026 Port Authority weekly advisory is newer and explicitly says departure drop-offs relocate to the Terminal 7 garage from 22 September.
For travel on or after 22 September, use the latest airport advisory and live signage as the authority. Road layouts around JFK can change quickly as construction moves between phases, so recheck on the day of travel, especially if you are meeting a flight at a fixed time.
