Caribbean heritage
Crown Heights has one of the largest Caribbean communities in New York, with a strong Jamaican and Trinidadian presence that shows up most visibly in the food, barbershops, and the annual West Indian American Day Carnival — held on Eastern Parkway each Labour Day weekend and one of the largest annual events in the entire city, drawing millions of people.
The Brooklyn Museum
The second-largest art museum in the US by building size, and genuinely undervisited because it sits in Crown Heights rather than Manhattan. The Egyptian collection, the feminist art collection, and the rotating contemporary exhibitions are all worth a separate trip. Free first Saturdays each month (partial free admission, with events).
Brooklyn Botanic Garden
Adjacent to the museum, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden is a 52-acre garden particularly famous for its Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden and the cherry blossom season in April — when it rivals any Central Park weekend for sheer number of people, but feels more intimate by design.
Getting there
The 2/3 trains serve Crown Heights directly (Eastern Pkwy/Brooklyn Museum and Franklin Ave), and it borders Prospect Heights and Park Slope to the west.
