Buy only the official ferry product
Use Statue City Cruises, the National Park Service’s authorised ferry concessioner, for access to Liberty and Ellis islands. NPS warns that unauthorised sellers may charge for products that do not include the access visitors expect.
A standard ferry ticket includes transportation to both islands and museum access. Pedestal and crown access are separate capacity-controlled options.
Choose the departure side that fits your trip
Official ferries depart from The Battery in Lower Manhattan and Liberty State Park in New Jersey. Manhattan pairs naturally with downtown sights; New Jersey can be easier for visitors staying or driving west of the Hudson.
Do not assume one side is universally faster. Your hotel, onward plan and transport connections matter more.
Understand the ticket time
NPS describes the printed time as the time to enter the security-screening queue, not a guaranteed boat departure. Screening, boarding and ferry circulation all need buffer.
Do not place a tight reservation immediately after the islands, especially in peak periods when lines can be long.
The Battery screening changed in 2026
NPS relocated the Battery security screening in March 2026. Re-check the current NPS instructions shortly before travel because the queue location, arrival window and crown check-in procedure are operational details that can change.

Crown, pedestal or general island visit?
The crown is a physically demanding stair experience with very limited advance inventory and no elevator to the crown. It is not simply a better version of the general ticket.
Pedestal access gives an elevated interior/outdoor experience. A general island visit still includes the Statue of Liberty Museum, close views and waterfront perspectives. Choose for your group’s interests and mobility.
Security and luggage
Expect airport-style screening. Large luggage and prohibited items can create serious problems, and NPS does not operate a general luggage-storage service at the screening point. Travel light.

Allow a half day for both islands
Liberty Island plus Ellis Island is not a quick photo stop. Security, ferry waits, museums and boarding make the timing elastic.
If immigration history matters to you, protect proper time for Ellis Island rather than treating it as an optional extra.
What to do on Liberty Island
Walk around the island for changing skyline and harbour views, visit the Statue of Liberty Museum and slow down enough to understand the monument’s history. The perimeter views are part of the experience.
Waterfront weather can feel much windier or hotter than Midtown, so dress for exposure.
Ellis Island is more than a ferry stop
The National Museum of Immigration is included with the ferry ticket. For many visitors, the processing spaces, migration stories and family-history context become the most memorable part of the day.
If you have a personal migration connection, build the schedule around Ellis rather than squeezing it between other bookings.
Families
The outing works well with children but includes queues, screening, stairs and exposed waterfront time. Keep bags light, carry permitted water/snacks and be realistic about museum attention spans.
Crown access is a specific physical experience. Check current official safety and child requirements before booking.
Accessibility

Ferry first plus one downtown cluster is a strong day. Ferry plus multiple fixed museum, deck, dinner and theatre bookings is fragile.
Best booking strategy
If crown or pedestal access matters, reserve once your dates are firm because capacity is limited. Earlier ferry starts generally leave more recovery time if queues grow and more flexibility for Ellis Island.
